Joe Mauer’s recovery is full of “ups and downs” following a concussion, Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said Sunday. The Twins catcher has been laying low since he was sent home last week, according to the Pioneer Press. He talks by phone with the team’s athletic training staff on a daily basis. Mauer was scratched before the game with Detroit after experiencing dizziness during batting practice.
“He’s had his moments where he hasn’t felt great and other times where he’s felt fine,” Antony said. “I don’t know exactly the symptoms, but (it’s) just where he feels a little bit out of it. More dizziness. Sluggish, not sharp.”
Since returning to the Twin Cities, the All-Star catcher has mostly spent quiet time at home, sleeping as much as possible in the house he shares with his wife and newborn twin girls.
“I think his house might be big enough that he can find a quiet room still,” Antony said with a grin.
Sports Illustrated reported that the plan originally called for Mauer would report to Target Field and possibly begin an exercise program on Saturday, but that it is being pushed back until at least Tuesday, the day he is eligible to come off the concussion disabled list. Mauer may stop by Target Field before the Twins take on on Kansas City on Tuesday, but the Pioneer Press said that he is not expected to even take another concussion test until he’s ready to resume baseball activity.
The very soonest he would likely return to play would when Twins go on the road to Texas on Friday.
