San Francisco 49ers guard Joe Looney says he didn’t try to take a cheap shot at Kevin Williams during Sunday’s exhibition game against the Vikings.
In an interview with CSNBayArea.com, Looney says he was just trying to “finish” the play.
The low blow gave Williams a hyper-extended knee and he’s now listed as “questionable” for the season opener in Detroit.
Looney says he tried to find Williams after the game to apologize, just to let him know that he’s not “that kind of player.”
“I didn’t try to take a dirty cheap shot at him,” Looney said. “I meant no harm.”
Ex-Viking Ben Leber isn’t buying it. While he’s thankful the injury to Williams wasn’t worse, he mentioned a move made famous by ex-wrestler Jake “The Snake” Roberts:
Great news for Kevin Williams, although bone bruises are still painful. I still want to DDT Joe Looney for the cheap shot. #vikings #nfl
