Facing his old teammates, White Sox starter Francisco Liriano showed no mercy Saturday afternoon at Target Field. He was even threatening with a no-hitter going into the seventh. Trevor Plouffe ruined the no-hitter with a two-run homer. Liriano struck out nine.
The Twins tried to get back in the game in the ninth, scoring a run, but Chicago held on for a 5-3 win. Joe Mauer missed his fifth game, the Pioneer Press reports. The teams play again at 1:10 p.m. Sunday.
The Twins traded Liriano away in July. The team was frustrated with his inconsistent play, and the White Sox thought they could make him better, the Pioneer Press reported at the time.
There’s no doubt that when the guy shines, he really shines. It’s hard to forget this gem, when Liriano threw a no-hitter against the White Sox wearing a Twins uniform in May 2011 in Chicago.
