Make it ten straight wins for the Gophers women’s basketball team as Lindsay Whalen has the Big Ten program on-fire in her first year as head coach.
Minnesota blew out Coppin State by 32 points, 84-52, Wednesday night at Williams Arena to improve to 10-0 this season. Only three other Division I teams in the country are a perfect 10-0: Louisville, North Carolina State, Maryland.
What do all four of the 10-and-0s have in common? They’re all ranked in the top 15 of the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
Louisville is fourth, Maryland sixth, NC State 10th and the Gophers are 13th in this week’s poll. Minnesota is ranked a bit lower, 16th, in the coaches poll.
The last time the Gophers started a season this hot was when Whalen was the star point guard, leading the Final Four-bound 2003-04 team to 15 straight wins to begin the season.
There are a bunch of teams at 8-0 and 9-0, including the likes of top-ranked UConn and No. 3 Baylor, but the Gophers reaching 10 wins already is quite the accomplishment.
Minnesota is off until Dec. 22 when they host Rhode Island to wrap up the non-conference schedule before opening Big Ten play at home against Wisconsin on Dec. 28.
