Teddy Bridgewater fumbled with 29 seconds left and the Vikings came up just short in a 23-20 loss to the Broncos Sunday afternoon in Denver.
The Vikings (2-2) tied it up 20-20 in the fourth quarter on two consecutive scores – a 48-yard touchdown run by Adrian Peterson and a field goal by Blair Walsh. But the Broncos (4-0) retook the lead on a 33-yard field goal with 1:51 left on the clock.
The Vikings got the ball and Bridgewater hoped to lead the offense downfield for a winning score. But he was sacked twice during the drive – the second time is when he lost the ball and Denver recovered with 29 seconds left to seal the victory, the Star Tribune reports.
Bridgewater was sacked a total of seven times during the game, according to 1500 ESPN.
He threw for 269 yards and his favorite receiver on the day was Mike Wallace who had eight catches, 83 yards and a touchdown. Rookie Stefon Diggs caught six passes for a team-high 87 yards in his NFL debut.
The Denver defense did a good job containing Adrian Peterson, who gained just 81 yards on the day. His long TD run was the only time he was able to break out.
Walsh also kicked a 38-yard field goal, but missed another 38-yard attempt in the second quarter, which loomed larger later in the game.
ESPN notes that Walsh has missed a kick in six of his last seven games, counting the preseason.
The Vikings have a bye next weekend. Their next game is Oct. 18 at home against Kansas City.
