The Minnesota Gophers won a great hockey game on Saturday evening over Wisconsin at Marriucci Arena.
The Gophers (11-2-1, 2-0) survived a wild 4-3 win on Saturday night as Seth Ambroz netted his second goal of the night to help lift the Gophers in the closing seconds.
The victory gives the Gophers the sweep in their first Big Ten weekend hockey series.
The Star Tribune reports that Minnesota’s Travis Boyd created a turnover then found Ambroz for the goal. Kyle Rau also had a goal and an assist on the night for Minnesota.
Ambroz finished an impressive weekend with four goals. The junior from New Prague now has seven on the season.
Eventhough, the Gophers dramatically outshot the Badgers 35-23 the game was back and forth all night.
Wisconsin (4-5-1) got on the board first as Frankie Simonelli put the Badgers up 1-0. The lead didn’t last long, seconds later Minnesota had an answer Rau slipped one into the net to even up the score.
The Badgers reclaimed the lead before the end of the first and held it until late in the second period, when Ambroz’s first goal evened up the game at two.
Minnesota took its first lead of the game early in the third period as Brady Skjei beat Wisconsin goalie Joel Rumpel.
But the Badgers drew even again, Michael Mersch got a big goal to tie the game at three.
It stayed that way into the game’s closing seconds, when with less than 30 seconds to play Boyd and Ambroz connected for the game winner.
Gopher goalie Adam Wilcox had 20 saves in the game for Minnesota.
