It couldn’t have come at a worse time, but the Gophers could be without wide receiver Derrick Engel against the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday.
Head coach Jerry Kill told the media today that Engel suffered a knee injury this week and he could miss the game. Details on his injury are unknown, other than it being a knee injury. Kill said they’ll learn more about the severity of the injury later this week.
“He did get banged up,” Kill said during a conference call, via the Pioneer Press. “We’ll know more as the process goes with his doctor. There’s speculation one way or the other, but we’ll see. It could be a medial (collateral). It could be cartilage. Until you get an MRI, you don’t know those things.”
It could wind up being a huge blow for the Gophers. Engel leads the team with 25 receptions for 401 yards and five touchdowns. There isn’t another receiver or tight end on that team with as much production.
GophersSports.com did a feature story on Engel’s football career just last week. The senior wideout grew up in Chaska, Minnesota where he evolved into a star player at Winona State University, then transferring to the University of Minnesota in 2011.
