How seriously should fans take the Kirk Cousins MVP predictions made by NFL Network’s Michael Irvin and Kyle Brandt? Kirk himself was asked about it Wednesday, and he shrugged it off as if it was no big deal.
“It’s about the Vikings as a team being in a good place and if they’re saying that they’re saying that because they’re excited about Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson – Za’Darius Smith and Danielle Hunter,” Cousins said. “I know that for me, team is how I’m able to have success at the quarterback position and I think that it’s also good content on a Wednesday morning when they’re trying to fill a segment. It’s the farthest things from our minds. The Green Bay Packers and finding a way to beat them is all we’re focused on.”
Toss the good TV fodder aside with real football stuff and the question is how Cousins will perform in Kevin O’Connell’s offense.
“Cousins was very interesting today in talking about how he’s getting ahold of the offense,” Purple Insider’s Matthew Coller said in a Bring Me The Sports report. “But the interesting discussion really surrounds how aggressive Kirk Cousins is going to be. O’Connell said [they’re] going to push him, [they’re] going to try to maximize what Cousins can do, push the ball down the field.”
Cousins was asked about pushing the ball down the field and taking more risks in the new offense, and he was hesitant to say he’ll bring more gunslinger to the field.
“I don’t know that it will flip any differently. I think I’ll still play the position the way I’ve played it. I think protecting the football is extremely important. I think being aggressive is extremely important and so you want to be efficient, but you also want to be explosive and we try to do both as much as we can.”
A good way Cousins can get into the MVP conversation early is by beating last year’s MVP, Aaron Rodgers, on Sunday.
