The football Gophers’ starting quarterback, Philip Nelson, is hung up with a bum hamstring, and backup QB Mitch Leidner will probably take the first snap against San Jose State Saturday.
But now coach Jerry Kill is saying that third-string quarterback Chris Streveler could very well see action during the final non-conference home game at TCF Bank Stadium.
“In our situation, the way we play, you can’t all of a sudden get conservative about what you do,” Kill tells the Star Tribune. “The way I’m approaching it right now, if we were playing tomorrow, Chris is our No. 2 quarterback, and he needs to be ready to play. And if Mitch gets tired, we’re going to play [Streveler].”
Streveler, who graduated early from high school to join the team in spring practice this year, is taking reps behind Leidner in practice this week, reports the Pioneer Press.
Streveler won the third-string spot over fellow freshman Donovahn Jones in fall camp this year. Jones was moved to wide receiver and has played this season.
Streveler’s high school background can be found here – with an interesting angle that says he’s a yoga enthusiast.
