Gophers coach Jerry Kill says he wouldn’t pull a red shirt off a freshman quarterback if he wasn’t going to play. That means Philip Nelson is your likely starter Saturday against Purdue.
In his weekly news conference, Kill also said Max Shortell was capable of playing against Wisconsin, but was comfortable with playing Nelson instead.

As for Marqueis Gray, he won’t take part in Tuesday’s practice becauase Kill says he’s still not 100 percent.
Kill also addressed the seniors on his 2012 squad. “Our goal is to get them to a bowl game,” Kill said. “That’s what we need to do.”
Right now, the Gophers are 0-3 in the Big 10 and 4-3 overall, and need two more wins to go anywhere.
Purdue is 3-4 on the year, and also winless in the Big 10.
