Gophers Women secure Frozen Four berth
The Gopher women cruised to victory Princeton in tonight’s game thanks to yet another hat trick from Senior forward Amanda Kessel, whose first-period, short-handed goal took the lead for Minnesota. The Gophers never looked back, only allowing Princeton a final buzzer beater during the waning seconds of the third period.
The night started inauspiciously for Minnesota, who allowed Princeton to score within the game’s first 30 seconds. Senior center Hannah Brandt tied things up on a power play assist form Kessel after Princeton defender Kelsey Koelzer got sent to the box for roughing.
Shortly after, junior Dani Cameranesi left the ice for a penalty of her own, setting up a power play opportunity for Princeton, but resulting in a shorthanded goal from Kessel off an assist from Brandt. Their final goal of the period came from Kessel as well, off another Minnesota power play.
Cameranesi and freshman starter Sarah Potomak tapped in two more goals during the second period, which the Gophers controlled handily. The period ended with Kessel’s 9th goal of the season, capping off the hat trick and putting the game well out of Princeton’s reach.
