Another blow for the Minnesota Twins as they were hoping to get Joe Mauer back from the disabled list on Thursday, only to learn of more concussion-like symptoms for their former All-Star.
Mauer had gone about five days without any side effects of a strained neck that he suffered diving for a ball on May 11 against the Angels, but the concussion-like symptoms returned while he warmed up for Thursday’s game.
“It’s progressing, but today wasn’t where I wanted to be,” Mauer told reporters after leaving the field, according to TwinsBaseball.com. “They’re telling me that can happen. I had to back off it today. There are different levels we’re attacking, and today I got a better feeling for where I’m at, and I’m not there yet.”
Mauer took batting practice and fielded grounders but had to shut his workout down early when the symptoms returned.

Mauer and the Twins know all too well how concussions can alter a player’s career.
Mauer was an All-Star catcher before a bad concussion in 2013 forced him to begin playing first base, and former Twins MVP Justin Morneau had his career cut short because of concussions.
It’s unclear what the next step is for Mauer, but he remains on the disabled list for now.
