The NFL Draft has come and gone, Ben Dogra has waved the white flag and Rick Spielman has been clear that the Vikings have no interest in trading Adrian Peterson.
Yet here we are again, discussing that very issue after comments the Dallas Cowboys owner made to a Dallas radio station Friday.
FOX Sports Southwest reports Jerry Jones would not rule out trading a 2016 first round pick if it could help the Cowboys win now.
“I’d be reluctant to, but certainly if the right situation came along that could improve us now, with where we are with Romo, his career and where we are with what we’ve put together, it’s a good time to go for it.”
Before this year’s draft Jones insisted that Dallas wouldn’t trade any picks for a veteran. The Cowboys then addressed several of their needs with draft picks including cornerback Byron Jones and defensive end Randy Gregory and by signing offensive lineman La’el Collins as an undrafted free agent.
The one issue the Cowboys haven’t addressed, though, is the departure of the NFL’s leading rusher, DeMarco Murray. 247 Sports notes that Dallas added Darren McFadden, who has only eclipsed the 200-carry mark twice in his career.
Dallas also has:
- Joseph Randle – an unproven 5th round pick
- Lance Dunbar – 80 total carries in three seasons
- Ryan Williams – only played in five NFL games
Pro Football Talk connects the dots, noting that Dallas has long been connected to Peterson.
“There aren’t many backs that would fit the bill outside of Adrian Peterson, which is a name the Cowboys have been linked to in the past albeit one the Vikings have said many times that they have no interest in dealing.”
Just last month, Peterson said playing for the Cowboys would be nice, but that he was under contract with the Vikings.
For his part in all of this, Rick Spielman reiterated at the draft that Peterson will be a Viking in 2015.
