Josh Dobbs not only lost the starting quarterback job to Nick Mullens, but he won’t even be the backup quarterback Saturday when the Vikings play the Bengals.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell announced Thursday that rookie Jaren Hall will be the backup to Mullens while Dobbs will be the emergency third-string quarterback.
“Jaren’s fully healthy now and has gotten back on the grass and really worked through his continued development,” O’Connell said. “Josh Dobbs will be ready to play like he has to help us go 3-2 over the last five.”
“Tons of confidence in all three guys,” he added.
Mullens would’ve been the starter had he not been on IR with a back injury when Kirk Cousins ruptured his Achilles Oct. 29 in Green Bay. That led to Minnesota trading for Dobbs, who replaced Hall after Hall was concussed in his first career start against the Atlanta Falcons.
Dobbs was magical in Atlanta and again against the Saints before falling back to earth with struggles against the Broncos, Bears and last week against the Raiders.
