Just when you think former Timberwolves General Manager David Khan has said it all, you get more gold like this.
In a piece about former Wolves guard Jonny Flynn, Grantland.com interviewed Minnesota assistant Dave Wohl for comment about Flynn and his abilities, as well as his desire to get back to the NBA.
What followed is one of the great quotes in the history of absurdity, with Wohl describing a conversation he had with Kahn when he was hired, which was six weeks after Ricky Rubio and Flynn were drafted back-to-back with the fifth and sixth overall picks in the 2009 draft.
Here’s the best of it, you can find the whole story here: Dave Wohl, Minnesota’s lead assistant, remembers arriving in Minnesota and Kahn asking him whether Rubio and Flynn could prosper playing together. Wohl described Flynn as a good, ambitious kid. He also said that Rubio and Curry would have made a better pairing. He didn’t believe either Flynn or Rubio could perform at shooting guard. “He said, ‘No, no. I want to play Jonny and Rubio. They remind me of [Walt] Frazier and [Earl] Monroe,'” Wohl said.
Flynn hasn’t played in an NBA game since late April of 2012, playing for the Melbourne Tigers of the Australian League last year.
Monroe and Frazier, known as the Rolls Royce Backcourt, are both hall of famers and members of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.
This is neither the first, nor the last of Kahn’s outrageous statements in the article, or in his history as a public figure representing the Wolves.
In case you forgot this gem, here’s Kahn at the NBA Summer League describing failed number two overall pick Darko Milicic as “manna from heaven.”
