Tonight, Mike Pelfrey might have to put in a solid performance to enhance his job security.
Pelfrey (3-5, 6.85 ERA), who is winless in his last four starts, hopes to bounce back against Seattle tonight.
The Mariners might be the perfect opponent. They’re dead-last in team hitting in the American League, with a combined .237 average through 54 games.
Minnesota’s starters, on the other hand, had a combined 5.64 ERA heading into Thursday, tied with Houston for the worst in baseball, according to Fox Sports North.
But if Pelfrey falters again, some say he should be under the same scrutiny as Worley and Hernandez.
Brian Wille from RantSports.com puts it this way: “Why should Pelfrey be exempt for underachieving? The Twins have plenty of better and younger options that could step in and use the development and give a better performance than what Pelfrey is giving them.”
If Kyle Gibson is one of those “younger options” — don’t hold your breath. Gibson, who was perhaps one solid start from getting a call to the big leagues, was rocked Thursday in Rochester, giving up six runs in six innings to the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.
If not Gibson, Cole De Vries? Liam Hendricks?
It might be up to Pelfrey to end the speculation.
