Hockey Day Minnesota is coming to the epicenter of the State of Hockey.
The Minnesota Wild announced in a press release this morning that Hockey Day Minnesota 2015 will take place on January 17 at Holman Field in St. Paul. This is an all-day event honoring hockey in Minnesota, with games played by multiple high schools, the Gophers and the Wild.
Hockey Day Minnesota started in 2007. This is the second time Hockey Day Minnesota has been in St. Paul. Phalen Park hosted Hockey Day in 2009.
St. Paul Johnson, the alma mater of Herb Brooks, and Luverne, who made the state tournament for the first time in school history last year, will kick off the day’s events. Perennial private school powers Hill Murray and St. Thomas Academy will face off in the second game of the day at Holman Field. The final outdoor game of the day will be a girls game between Cretin-Derham Hall and the Duluth Northern Stars.
The press release made no mention of a Gopher game. However, the Gophers are scheduled to play at home versus the Wisconsin Badgers that day, so it is easy to assume the border battle will be a part of Fox Sports North’s coverage.
The day will end at Xcel Energy Center, which is just a half-a-mile away from Holman Field. The Wild will face off against the Arizona Coyotes at 8 p.m.
Hockey Day Minnesota plans to pay tribute to the Minnesota National Guard 34th Combat Aviation Brigade and 2-147th Assault Helicopter Battalion, who are based at Holman Field and were recently deployed to Kuwait. All proceeds from the event will go to Serving Our Troops, a charity who helps support troops all around the world, and the Saint Paul Youth Hockey Association.
The rinks will be set up so Holman Field can set up as a backdrop for the games. Fans will also have a chance to meet members of the National Guard while attending the outdoor games.
