With the Twins down a run, Byron Buxton drew a walk to lead off the eighth inning with Joey Gallo and Carlos Correa next up in the order; predictably the Twins were out six pitches later. The Cubs then homered in the top of the ninth to seal a 6-2 win at Target Field Friday night.
Minnesota’s hitting woes continued Friday, connecting on just four hits while scoring just two runs, the first of which came on a throwing error later ruled a fielder’s choice.
Sonny Gray kept the Cubs at bay through five and a third, allowing just one run off four hits, striking out nine.
Griffin Jax gave up the lead in the seventh, allowing two runs off four hits in his one inning of work.
Kyle Farmer, Jorge Polanco and Willi Castro were set down one-two-three in an eight pitch ninth inning to seal the loss.
