Now that the Vikings have drafted Christian Darrisaw to solidify to secure Kirk Cousins’ blind side, Day 2 of the NFL Draft could be a very active day for Minnesota.
General Manager Rick Spielman enter the day with a ton of ammo to move up if he wants to. Minnesota does not have a second-round pick – they lost that when they traded for Yannick Ngakoue last season – but Spielman is armed with four third-round picks and a trio of fourth-round picks.
- Round 2: No picks
- Round 3: Nos. 66, 78, 86 and 90
- Round 4: Nos. 119, 125 and 134
The Vikings got 66 and 86 from the Jets when they traded down from No. 14 to No. 23, where they selected Darrisaw. Spielman said they were strongly considering Darrisaw at 14, so to get him at 23 was a perfect scenario.
Day 3 of the draft is Saturday and the Vikings own two fifth-round picks (Nos. 157 and 168) and a sixth-round choice (No. 199). They do not have a seventh-round pick this year.
The seven combined picks in Rounds 3-4 give Spielman the tools he would need to orchestrate a move back into the second round. The team still has plenty of needs, including on the interior offensive line, defensive end, safety, cornerback and wide receiver.
Oh, and maybe you’ve heard, but the Vikings could do with finding a quarterback capable of stepping in once Kirk Cousins’ mega contract expires after the 2022 season. There was talk Thursday that had the Broncos drafted a quarterback, which they didn’t, the Vikings may have been interested in trading for 24-year-old Drew Lock. It’s a storyline worth following again Friday.
