Former Gophers volleyball coach Mike Hebert died Monday in San Diego at the age of 75, the University of Minnesota announced.
Hebert, who spent 15 of his 35 years as a Hall of Fame coach at the U of M, posted a coaching record of 381-137 while at Minnesota. He coached the Gophers from 1996-2010, leading the U of M to 14 NCAA tournament appearances including three trips to the Final Four.
“We are all deeply saddened by Mike’s passing,” Gophers coach Hugh McCutcheon said in a release. “He had a profound impact on volleyball here at the University of Minnesota, but his sphere of influence in our sport was far greater than that. He was extremely successful at the University of Illinois and he led a number of very successful international campaigns with USA volleyball. He was a great man, a great coach and he will be missed by the entire volleyball community.”
Hebert’s final coaching record after retiring in 2010 was a stunning 952-392, including 26 trips to the NCAA tournament in 35 years.
Hebert was inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006 and into the Minnesota M Club Hall of Fame in 2011.
According to The News-Gazettealk in Illinois, Hebert died after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
