Week 1 of the NFL season is upon us and the Green Bay Packers have already won while the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears have earned a tally mark in the loss column.
Minnesota kicks off the season under the lights of Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco (technically Santa Clara) tonight as road favorites against the 49ers, who aren’t as scary on the field as they are off it.
The one thing you need to know
The 49ers are a mess right now. Chris Borland, their rookie leading tackler from a year ago, retired. So did Pro Bowl defensive lineman Justin Smith and linebacker Patrick Willis.
It’s so bad in San Francisco that even Aldon Smith, whom the 49ers cut after multiple arrests, is ripping the team. He told the San Jose Mercury News that he’s glad to be playing for a team that “looks out for their players.”
Wide receiver Michael Crabtree also left town for the Raiders, telling the San Francisco Chronicle that he took less money to play with a quarterback who can deliver the ball. How’s that for a shot at 49ers starter Colin Kaepernick, who, oh by the way, completed just five passes all preseason.
It’s so messy in San Fran that even Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young called the situation “scary,” according to the Chronicle.
