Chad Greenway wants to play one more season and finish his career as a Viking, but whether or not that happens is all about the mighty dollar.
Speaking with Twin Cities media at the NFL Combine on Thursday, head coach Mike Zimmer said the Vikings would like to have Greenway return, but “it all comes down to money,” according to Vikings.com reporter Lindsey Young.
Greenway is on record saying he would prefer to wrap up his career in Minnesota, but playing elsewhere isn’t entirely out of the question.
He told NFL Sirius XM earlier this month that he still feels he’s playing at a high level.
“A goal of mine was to play in one place for my whole career. I want to finish here,” he said. “The biggest thing is the product I’m putting on the field and continuing to do so at a high level.”
On March 9 Greenway will officially become an unrestricted free agent, meaning any team in the league and offer him a contract.
Greenway’s leadership is a key part of his value to the Vikings. General manager Rick Spielman mentioned as much while speaking at the Combine on Wednesday, although he didn’t directly talk about Greenway’s future, according to the Star Tribune.
Spielman did, however, mention that defensive end Brian Robison will likely be back. The Vikings could save some money by cutting Robison, but it doesn’t appear they will.
