The NFL Combine is just around the corner and for three Gopher football players the event could be the key to their future in the NFL.
Tight end Maxx Williams, running back David Cobb and linebacker Damien Wilson were all invited to the event, which takes place in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium between Feb. 17-23.
Certainly there is a lot on the line for Williams, who is drawing some late first-round grades, and Cobb, who impressed scouts at the Senior Bowl. But perhaps the one with the most to gain is Wilson.
At 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, Wilson tells the Star Tribune he’s trying to improve his explosiveness.
“[Linebackers] in the NFL have a wide range,” Wilson said. “Some guys are playing at 265. Some are play at 220-230. I feel like 240 is about perfect for me. I think it’s just about making plays and understanding concepts at the next level, and being able to move around more comfortable at the weight you are at.”
Wilson led the Gophers with 119 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss last season. He also made a lot of big plays for the Gophers defense, recording four sacks, an interception and forcing a fumble for Minnesota.

“It’s pretty sweet, knowing I’ll get a chance to go out there and strut my stuff,” said Wilson.
