For the first time since 1960 the Minnesota Gophers have beaten Nebraska in college football 34-23.
The Gopher victory ends a string of 16 straight wins for Nebraska over Minnesota.
Quarterback Philip Nelson scored on a one yard rushing touchdown, his second rushing touchdwn of the game with less than a minute to go by two scores. Jeremy Baltazar than intercepted a Taylor Martinez pass to ice the game.
Minnesota ran for 273 yards in the game as they put up more than 400 yards of total offense.
David Cobb had another big day for Minnesota. He ran for a career high 138 yards.
It didn’t start that easy for the Gophers though. Minnesota rallied from a 10-0 early first quarter deficit.
Mitch Leidner got Minnesota on the scoreboard with a one yard touchdown run. Then in the second Nelson hit Derrick Engel on a 33 yard touchdown pass to put Minnesota on top 14-10.
That lead was pushed to seven before the half on a 26-yard field goal by Chris Hawthorne. Minnesota pushed the lead all the way out to 14 in the third quarter. Nelson found the end zone on a quarterback sneak for his first touchdown run of the afternoon.
The Huskers battled back Martinez found Sam Cotton for a three yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to seven. In the fourth, Nebraska then cut the lead to four on a 37-yard field goal from Pat Smith.
The win also makes the Gophers bowl eligible, as they improve to 6-2 on the season and 2-2 in the Big Ten.
