University of Minnesota football fans have been waiting a long time for their team to play in a New Year’s Day Bowl game. The last time that happened was in the 1962 Rose Bowl when the Gophers beat UCLA 21-3.
Finally the wait is over, and Gophers’ fans are responding in droves.
According to the Star Tribune, the university has sold 6,600 tickets in just five days to this year’s Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida, where the Gophers will meet up with the Missouri Tigers.
The newspaper points out that’s more tickets were sold in five days than the school sold in the last two bowl games combined.
The university offered students a special discounted rate to get to the Citrus Bowl. The $299 package included:
- Round-trip transportation via charter bus
- Two nights’ lodging
- A ticket to the Citrus Bowl
- Admission to the Alumni Association’s pregame tailgate
- Snacks and beverages on the bus
- A T-shirt
- A 2015 student football season ticket
According to The Daily Gopher, package sold out in minutes.
