After a spring where he was singled out for making some of the biggest strides, Gophers wide receiver Jeff Borchardt is going through one of the biggest challenges of his life.
It wasn’t a vicious hit, a concussion, or even an on-the-field injury that took Borchardt off the practice field, instead the 20-year-old walk-on was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
The Star Tribune reports that Borchardt made a spectacular leaping catch during spring practice and suffered a concussion.
A CT-Scan didn’t reveal any internal bleeding or skull fracture, but doctors saw another abnormality that later that evening was diagnosed as a tumor.
The newspaper notes that Borchardt underwent surgery on Tuesday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. On Thursday, the family announced that the surgery was a complete success as it waits for the pathology report.

Borchardt committed to Minnesota out of Wayzata in February 2013, he already is already focused on returning to the football field again in 2016. As a redshirt freshman, Borchardt played in three games last season, but did not record any offensive stats.
But Borchardt was gaining favor with the coaching staff with his hard work.
“I truly think Jeffrey’s looking at this as just a hiccup in the road,” Borchardt’s father Jeff Sr. told the Star Tribune. “He’ll be back stronger than ever.”
