The Gopher hockey team took home some more hardware after its weekend sweep of No. 12 Michigan to move into a tie for first place in the Big Ten.
The conference named Gopher forward Kyle Rau and goaltender Adam Wilcox as two of the three Stars of the Week. Rau was named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week after he scored four goals during the weekend against Michigan, while Wilcox was named the Big Ten Third Star.
On Friday, Rau tallied the second hat trick of his career in Minnesota’s 6-2 victory over the Wolverines. His first goal on Friday marked the 150th point of his career.
Rau then added an empty net insurance goal in Minnesota’s 2-0 victory over the Wolverines on Saturday. Rau, a senior, now ranks 27th all-time at Minnesota with 153 points.
Wilcox also had a big weekend for Minnesota. The defending Big Ten Player and Goaltender of the Year posted a 1.00 goals against average and a .959 save percentage on the weekend for Minnesota. He allowed just one even-strength goal on Friday and followed that up with a 26-save shutout on Saturday.
According to the Star Tribune, it was the first time this season the Wolverines had been held scoreless. They came into the weekend averaging a nation-leading 4.21 goals per game.
Wilcox now leads the Big Ten with 16 wins and four shutouts this season and has 11 shutouts in his career.
The victories vaulted the Gophers back into the college hockey polls, after missing them for three consecutive weeks.
Minnesota carries a six-game unbeaten streak into this weekend’s two game series at Penn State.
