Gophers basketball coach Richard Pitino signed his second recruit of the spring on Tuesday.
The latest is 5-foot-11 point guard Dre Mathieu, who chose the University of Minnesota over Ole’ Miss and Pepperdine. He also had scholarship offers from UCLA and Memphis.
But is Mathieu really 5-foot-11? His coach at Central Arizona College tells the Pioneer Press that Mathieu is “the best 5-foot-9 rebounder I’ve ever coached.”
Regardless, Mathieu averaged 17.5 points and seven rebounds per game last season.
Amelia Rayno of the Star Tribune writes that Mathieu gives Pitino a true point guard to work with, perhaps allowing Andre Hollins to play shooting guard.
For being shorter than 6-feet tall, dunking like this is impressive.
