Gophers point guard Marcus Carr announced Monday that he’s entering his name in the 2020 NBA Draft.
The surprise announcement from Carr, who averaged 15.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.7 assists as a sophomore, doesn’t necessarily mean Carr won’t be back with the Gophers for his junior season because he is not hiring an agent.
“After speaking to my family, we have decided that I will be entering my name in this upcoming 2020 NBA draft,” Carr wrote in an Instagram post. “My intentions are to stay in the draft and pursue a professional career in the NBA. However, during the process I will be retaining my college eligibility status by not signing with an agent.”
According to the Star Tribune, Carr told coach Richard Pitino that he wants to return to the University of Minnesota and play for the Gophers during his junior season. But by entering the draft process he can get a feel for what his chances in pro ball are.
Carr has until June 3 to remove his name from the NBA Draft.
“I am looking forward to receiving valuable information going through whatever process this unique draft year does include,” Carr added. “Ultimately making the best decision for myself and family.”

Minnesota has already lost double-double machine Daniel Oturu, who has declared for the NBA Draft and could be a lottery pick.
