Gophers running back David Cobb has been added to the 2014 Maxwell Award Watch List. The trophy, which has been handed out since 1937, goes to the most outstanding collegiate football player.
The University of Minnesota says Cobb ranks seventh nationally and fourth in the Big Ten with 819 rushing yards.
During last week’s victory against Northwestern, Cobb eclipsed the 2,000-career-yard mark.
He has run for 2,086 yards on 402 carries in 27 games. Cobb became the seventh Gopher all-time to record multiple 200-yard rushing games after rushing for a career high 220 yards against Middle Tennessee State and for 207 yards against San Jose State.
Most importantly, the Gophers are 8-1 in games when Cobb runs for more than 100 yards.
The award last year went to Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron. Other recent winners include Manti Te’o, Andrew Luck, Cam Newton and Tim Tebow.
Semifinalists will be announced Nov. 3, the list will be narrowed to three finalists on Nov. 24, and the winner will be announced on Dec. 11 as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The presentation will be made Dec. 13 at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Galla.
KFAN notes that it is the third award that Cobb is now on the watch list for. The others:
- Doak Walker Award – which goes to college football’s top running back
- Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award – Top offensive player who was born in or attended high school in Texas
