Statistically one of the best rebounding guards in the country during the 2019-20 season, Sean Sutherlin returning to Minnesota to play for the Gophers and head coach Ben Johnson.
Sutherlin, a graduate transfer from the University of New Hampshire, is a 6-foot-5 guard who will help fill the void left by a guards Marcus Carr, Tre’ Williams and Jamal Mashburn Jr., all of whom have entered the NCAA transfer portal.
Sutherlin missed the 2020-21 season due to injury, but in 2019-20 he played his junior season at New Hampshire and averaged 12.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. His best performance was arguably against Bryant on Nov. 26, 2019, when he scored 21 points and grabbed 20 rebounds.
He led the American East Conference with 12 double-doubles in 2019-20, and was second in the conference in overall rebounding.
Sutherlin is a native of New Brighton, Minnesota. He starred at Irondale High School where he averaged 23.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as a senior in 2017.
Prior to his one season at New Hampshire, Sutherlin played at Sheridan College in Wyoming.
What’s more is that Sutherlin played on Minnesota’s AAU circuit with Parker Fox, whom is being targeted by the Gophers as a transfer from Northern State University in South Dakota. Fox, from Mahtomedi, Minnesota, led Northern State with 22.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game as a junior this past season.
Minnesota has had seven players from this past season’s roster enter the transfer portal, though the team has since received commitments from George Washington’s Jamison Battle, Lafayette’s E.J. Stephens, William & Mary’s Luke Loewe and now Sutherlin.
