Smith was second on the team with 17 receptions for 279 yards and a touchdown. Minnesota’s top four receivers going forward are Drew Wolitarsky, Rashad Still, Eric Carter and freshman Tyler Johnson.
Quarterback Mitch Leidner has just 5 touchdown passes in seven games this season and the Gophers passing offense is ranked 12th out of 14 teams in the Big Ten.
The Gophers have had off-the-field trouble this season, including restraining orders issued against four players last month.
