After two weeks of non-conference action, Gophers quarterback Philip Nelson is seventh among Big Ten rushers with 205 yards.
He’s averaging almost as many yards rushing per game (102.5) as he is passing (113).
That begs the question: Is Nelson running too much? Nelson doesn’t think so.
“We got a couple plays where it’s a zone read (option),” Nelson told the Pioneer Press. “And if the defender goes to tackle the running back, I have to pull it. That’s the play we were able to gash it with a whole bunch with the running back and me. They [New Mexico State] had a tough time really figuring that one out.”
Nelson’s 205 rush yards are far more than any other Big Ten quarterback. The closest to him is Michgan’s Devin Gaardner with 134 rush yards.
Minnesota’s passing attack has been subpar. The leading receiver is redshirt freshman tight end, Maxx Williams, who has three receptions for 47 yards and one touchdown.
