The Gophers men’s basketball team filled a big hole Wednesday when point guard Mike Mitchell Jr. committed to Ben Johnson’s program.
After losing Ta’Lon Cooper to the transfer portal, point guard was the Gophers’ biggest position of need this offseason. In Mitchell the Gophers are getting a point guard that averaged 11.4 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.1 rebounds this season for Pepperdine.
Mitchell finished second in assists per game each of the last two seasons in the West Coast Conference.
The 6-foot-2 sophomore shot 44% from three this season. Mitchell was named to the West Coast Conference’s all-freshman team for the 2021-22 season.
The Gophers beat out the likes of Oklahoma, Clemson, San Diego State, and UNLV for Mitchell’s commitment.
