The Gophers lost arguably their best player in Trevor Mbakwe and replaced him with two-star point guard Daquein McNeil and 5-11 junior college entrant Dre Mathieu.
Notice how every other team in the conference received a better grade than Minnesota. USA Today won’t be as harsh on the Gophers next year if they can land in-state recruits, Tyus Jones, Reid Travis or Rashad Vaughn. The Star Tribune reports that Travis will take an official visit to the U of M on the weekend of Oct. 25, although Duke is considered to be the favorite landing spot for the 6-7 power forward.
Speaking of grades, USA Today also released a slideshow of the most significant college sports scandals of all-time. Former coach Clem Haskins made the slideshow, and his photo is accompanied by this caption.
Minnesota basketball (1999): It was revealed that Minnesota basketball coach committed major academic fraud for several years during his tenure. Former academic adviser Jan Gangelhoff admitted to writing over 400 papers for at least 20 players. In turn, the Golden Gophers eventually forfeited postseason wins between 1993 and 1998. That included the school’s Final Four appearance in 1997. Haskins lost his job in light of the scandal and also was dealt a seven year show-cause penalty.
