A University of Minnesota basketball player is behind bars, arrested on suspicion of assault.
According to the Star Tribune, Gophers sophomore guard DaQuein McNeil is being held without bail at the Hennepin County jail after he was arrested in Minneapolis.
The Hennepin County police report indicates McNeil is in custody for probable cause domestic assault. He was booked at 3:01 p.m. Monday.
The Gophers released a statement saying McNeil has been suspended from all team activities.
“Men’s basketball student-athlete Daquein McNeil has been suspended from all team activities pending an investigation into a possible domestic assault,” athletic director Norwood Teague said in a statement released by the university, via ESPN. “We are currently gathering information and cooperating with the authorities.
“This athletics department values respect and positively impacting the lives of others and will not tolerate any form of domestic assault from its staff or student-athletes.”
McNeil didn’t play much as a freshman, but he’s been a key reserve on this year’s team. Through four games, the 6-foot-3 guard is averaging 3.3 points and 3.3 rebounds and he’s considered a 3-point shooting threat.
The Gophers play in the NIT Season Tip-Off tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City this week. They play St. John’s on Wednesday and will play the winner or loser of Gonzaga versus Georgia on Friday.
