A big week from Gopher freshman Carlie Wagner was recognized by the Big Ten Monday.
Wagner was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after averaging 22.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game for the Gophers against Illinois and Michigan State last week.
The New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva product shot an impressive .485 (16-of-33) from the field and she was 8-of-19 from behind the three-point line in the two games.
She started the week by scoring a then-career-high 19 points against Illinois on Thursday, before surging past that mark with 25 points and 5 three-pointers in the win over Michigan State on Sunday.

Wagner currently is the Gophers’ third-leading scorer, averaging 11.6 points per game. She’s second on the squad with 39 three-pointers on the season. But she has really stepped up her play over the last seven games, scoring in double figures and averaging 14.1 points with a total of 26 threes during that span.
Fans may remember Wagner from the Minnesota State High School girls basketball tournament last season. She broke the girls state tournament career scoring record in a performance that included a 53 point single-game effort in NRHEG’s first round victory.
