A really tough break for the Gophers men’s basketball team Friday as the team announced that Davonte Fitzgerald will miss the entire season after suffering a non-contact knee injury on Thursday afternoon.
The 6’8” forward from Texas A&M sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules but he was expected to be a key contributor this season. According to the Gophers, Fitzgerald tore the anterior cruciate ligament, medial and lateral meniscus in his left knee during Thursday’s practice.
“We are disappointed in the recent injury news as it pertains to Davonte,” head coach Richard Pitino said in a statement. “He had worked extremely hard to get himself ready for this season. We are confident he will be back and ready to go next season.”

In a summer blog post earlier this year, Pitino commented on how excited he was to use Fitzgerald as a true 3-point threat.
“Our team last year lacked three point shooting,” Pitino wrote. “I am hoping Davonte can be the guy who consistently provides that. Nobody puts in more time than him in the gym!”
