Lindsay Whalen still doesn’t know what it feels like to lose a game as head coach of the University of Minnesota women’s basketball team.
The four-time WNBA champion point guard is in her first season coaching the Gophers, and she’s got them rolling with seven consecutive wins, including an impressive upset of 12th-ranked Syracuse last Friday.
That victory, coupled with a win over Air Force on Sunday, has vaulted the Gophers to a No. 14 ranking in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll.
Only one other Big Ten team is ranked higher than Minnesota, and that’s seventh-ranked Maryland (8-0). Iowa is also in the top 25 at No. 16 overall.
This is the highest the Gophers have been ranked since being 11th in the country in February 2006, which was just two years after Whalen had led Minnesota to the Final Four as a player.
Whalen’s Gophers host Incarnate Word on Wednesday and then go on the road for a tough game against Boston College on Sunday.
