The No. 2 Gopher women’s hockey team trampled St. Cloud State this weekend with back-to-back shutouts. A 12-0 win Friday was followed by a 7-0 win on Saturday. Eleven players scored against St. Cloud in the series. After Friday’s win, at least 15 out of the 16 Gopher skaters recorded at least one point, Gopher Sports reports.
Saturday’s scorers included freshman Sydney Baldwin with her first collegiate goal, Milica McMillen, Rachael Bona, Kelly Pannek and Hannah Brandt. Kelsey Cline had a career-high three assists.
Junior goaltender Amanda Leveille had 14 saves. The Gophers outshot the Huskies, 39-14.
Minnesota is on fire with a nine-game winning streak. The Gopher women take a break until they host St. Lawrence Sunday, Jan. 4, and Tuesday, Jan. 6.
On the men’s side, the Gophers and Spartans duked it out on the ice for a second night in a row, but the game ended in 3-3 overtime tie. In the shootout, the teams went six rounds until the Spartans managed a 2-1 win. The Spartans earned an extra point in the conference standings by winning the shootout.
The Gophers shut out Michigan State Friday 5-0, but Michigan State came out hungry Saturday. The Spartans scored at 2:22 in the game, capitalizing on a power play. Minnesota responded with a Connor Reilly goal near the 16-minute mark in the first, with the assist from Seth Ambroz and Travis Boyd. A second Gopher goal came on a power play less than two minutes later when Kyle Rau scored.
The Spartans had another goal with 24 seconds left in the first, bringing the score to 2-2.
Michigan State took the only goal in the second. Minnesota saw another power play goal in the third again from Connor Reilly with the assist from Mike Rielly and Justin Kloos, just over two minutes in the third period, bringing the score to 3-3.
Michigan State had 45 shots on goal compared to Minnesota’s 24.
A scoreless five-minute overtime led to a 3-3 tie. The Gophers then faced their first shootout of the season. Spartan Michael Ferrantino got the first goal for Michigan State. Ambroz responded with a Minnesota goal. It took five more rounds before Matt DeBlouw scored the goal to give the Spartans’ the shootout win.
Even with the tie, it was a record night for Gophers sophomore forward Connor Reilly and junior goalie Adam Wilcox, who both set career highs. Reilly had three points, including his first two-time goal. Wilcox snagged 42 saves.

The Gopher men are now 9-4-1 overall and 1-0-1-0 in the Big Ten. They won’t resume play until Jan. 2-3, when they host the 24th Annual Mariucci Classic with Merrimack, UMass-Lowell and RIT.
