The back-to-back national champion Gopher women’s hockey team hadn’t lost since Feb. 17, 2012 against North Dakota.
62 consecutive wins later, UND came back to haunt Minnesota again.
After soundly defeating the Sioux 6-1 yesterday, a game in which four Gophers had multi-point efforts, Minnesota couldn’t pull off a comeback late in their series finale this afternoon, falling 3-2.
UND jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, but Minnesota answered back with two goals in the second, one by junior defender Rachel Ramsey, the other by senior forward Sarah Davis.
But in the third UND stood strong despite being outshot, having to kill off a Gopher power play, and facing an extra Gopher attacker when Minnesota pulled the goalie for the final minute-and-a-half.
The No. 4 Sioux are now 9-1-1 on the year, while the No. 1 Gophers drop to 12-1-1.
The 62-game win streak has long been the NCAA Division I Women’s Hockey record, passing the consecutive win record at 21 last year, and unbeaten record at 32, previously held by Wisconsin. Their 41-0 record last season was the first NCAA Division I hockey undefeated campaign since the Cornell men in 1970, and during the streak the U outscored opponents 323-60.
The loss brought nothing but congratulations to the team from media and fans alike.
