Kelly Terry scored three goals Saturday, sending the University of Minnesota Gopher hockey team back to the women’s Frozen Four, with a chance to win a third consecutive NCAA title, the Star Tribune reports.
The Gophers broke a 1-1 tie in the second period with four unanswered goals to defeat Boston University 5-1 in the NCAA quarterfinals at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.
The Gophers (37-1-1) will meet Wisconsin in next Friday’s semifinals in Hamden, Conn. The Badgers defeated Harvard, 2-1, in Saturday’s other quarterfinal game.
Kelly’s second and third goals came early in the third period and gave the Gophers some breathing room in the rematch of their 2013 national championship game, which the Gophers won 6-3, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
The Gophers are looking to capture their third straight national championship. They have a 25-game winning streak going; their last loss was to North Dakota on Nov. 17, according to the Pioneer Press.
It’s the Gophers’ 10th Women’s Frozen Four appearance.
Terry, a senior from Whitby, Ontario, scored the game-winning goal in last year’s triple-overtime victory over North Dakota in the NCAA quarterfinals. She scored the first goal of Saturday’s game and added two in the third period, giving her 21 for the season.
Maryanne Menefee scored the other goal for the Gophers. Sophomore goalie Amanda Leveille, from Kingston, Ont., made 28 saves for the Gophers, who outshot BU, 46-29.
