The Gopher men’s hockey team was undefeated going into tonight’s clash of college hockey big boppers in South Bend, but they picked up their first loss of the year in game number one of their series against Notre Dame, a 4-1 defeat to the Irish.
It was a scoreless first period, and each team put a goal on the board early in the second, with Ben Marshall evening the score at one seven minutes into the second session for Minnesota.
But the rest of the game went the way of the Irish, adding a second goal late in the second period while tacking on two more for good measure in the third, sending Minnesota to loss number one on the season.
Minnesota freshman Gabe Guertler played his first game for the Gophers after missing the first month of the season due to a suspension for violating team rules.
Minnesota will have a chance for redemption tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Compton Family Ice Arena, the finale of the weekend series.
