Chalk this story up to Teddy Bridgewater, because without following the former Vikings quarterback on Twitter we might’ve never caught wind of Tutu Atwell’s son setting a record at Bridgewater’s college.
Atwell, who starred for the Gophers as a wide receiver in the mid-’90s, is now the proud father of a child who on Monday night broke the University of Louisville’s single-season receiving yards record.

Tutu Atwell Jr., a sophomore for the Cardinals, racked up 147 receiving yards in Louisville’s 38-28 victory over Mississippi State in the Music City Bowl. He finished the season with 1,272 yards to set the university’s new single-season record.
Atwell Jr. also threw a 33-yard touchdown pass on a trick play.
So how do father and son stack up as big-time college football wide receivers? Well, the younger Atwell, through two years, is on pace to demolish the numbers put up by his father in four years (1994-97) at the University of Minnesota.
- Atwell Sr.: 171 catches for 2,640 yards and 17 TD
- Atwell Jr.: 93 catches for 1,678 yards and 13 TD
Atwell Sr. still ranks fourth all-time with the Gophers in receptions and receiving yards, and is fifth in touchdowns. The three players that rank ahead of him in receptions and touchdowns are Eric Decker, Tyler Johnson and Ron Johnson.
Gophers sophomore Rashod Bateman already has 17 touchdowns through two seasons.
