A few weeks ago, head coach Richard Pitino got the Gophers off the recruiting schnide, landing their first 2014 recruit in Seattle power forward Josh Martin.
Today, Pitino adds some speed to go with that power, with Jacksonville point guard Nate Mason committing to the U of M for the 2014 season.
Mason attends Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, and with Pitino having come to Minnesota from Florida International University just six months ago, we unabashedly speculate that Pitino was recruiting Mason long before he walked through the Williams Arena doors.
Fun facts about Mason and his high school:
- Mason is 5’11” and just 150 lbs. That’s tiny, but he is fast, and says that Pitino’s style of play fits him well.
- Wikipedia describes Arlington Country Day School as “notable for it’s basketball.” So that’s fun.
- Here’s the weirdest recruiting video we could find of Mason.
Here’s what all-knowing D1 Circuit thinks of the signing.

Welcome aboard Nate, we do hope you’re better at basketball than spelling, but if you’re as good as you are excited, this is going to be fun. Same goes for you Martin.
I'm officially committed to a University of Minnesota! Go Golphers!!!!!! #blessed
