Five-star shooting guard Gary Trent Jr., a product of Apple Valley High School, is going to name his top five college choices sometime in the next two weeks.
“With my recruitment, I’m actually planning on cutting my list down this week or next week,” Trent wrote in a blog for USA Today. “I’m gonna cut it down to five schools. It’s just time to focus more on the schools I’m most interested in and start the process more seriously.”
But because Trent plans on going to the same college as his close friend, fellow five-star recruit, Wendell Carter, the Gophers are a long shot at best to draw Trent to Williams Arena. That’s because Carter’s list of eight finalists doesn’t include Minnesota.
“Wendell (Carter) and I are still planning to play together in college,” Trent said in his blog.

It’s similar to what Tyus Jones and Jahlil Okafor did when they both picked Duke a couple of years ago. Jones included the Gophers as a finalist but Okafor never did. We’ll have to wait and see if the Gophers make Trent’s list.
Trent, the son of former Timberwolves power forward Gary Trent, recently announced that he’s leaving Apple Valley to play his senior year at Findlay Prep in Nevada – a move that he believes will help him better prepare for Division I college basketball.
Minnesota’s top 2017 recruits
According to 247 Sports, these are the top five recruits in Minnesota’s Class of 2017.
- Gary Trent Jr. – Apple Valley
- Nathan Reuvers – Lakeville North
- Theo John – Champlin Park
- Jericho Sims – Cristo Rey Jesuit (Minneapolis)
- Brad Davison – Maple Grove
Reuvers and Davison have already committed to Wisconsin while John and Sims are still considering the Gophers.
Sims is the son of former Gophers basketball player Charles Sims (1971-75) and the younger brother of ex-Gophers football star Dominique Sims.
