After being fired as Twins manager after the 2014 season, Gardenhire took 2015 off before returning to Minnesota last season as a minor-league instructor and talent evaluator.
“I miss the ballpark,” Gardenhire said when he returned to the Twins, according to the Pioneer Press. “I just miss being in a uniform and hanging out with the people. This is giving me the opportunity to get back in there and do those things.”
Gardenhire is replacing Glenn Sherlock in Arizona after Sherlock took a job as third base coach with the New York Mets. He’ll work under Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo.
The Twins won six division titles under Gardenhire as manager and he was named American League Manager of the Year in 2010. His career managerial record includes 1,068 wins and 1,039 losses.
Former Twin Dave McKay (1975-76) is the first base coach in Arizona.
