Thirteen years and 1,068 wins speaks volumes about the success Ron Gardenhire had as manager of the Minnesota Twins.
But four straight seasons of 90-plus losses cost the longtime boss his job at the end of the 2014 season. “Gardy” says he’s enjoying his time off, but he told Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal that he’ll listen if a team shows interest in hiring him.
“I’m going to take it easy,” Gardehire said. “If someone is interested in me as we go along, I’ll listen to just about anything. I owe that to baseball.”
Rosenthal reports that Gardehire has hired an agent for the first time since 1987, although he says he’s not rooting for any manager to get fired so he can slide in and take their job.
The agent, John Boggs, told Rosenthal that he thinks Gardenhire is getting the “itch” to manage again.
Hardball Talk’s Aaron Gleeman writes that Gardenhire is “far from a bad manager,” but his 6-21 postseason record combined with a sub-.500 record since 2007 are a couple of reasons he wouldn’t hire him.
Ron Gardenhire has a 612-685 (.471) record, one 90-win season, four 90-loss seasons, and zero playoff wins since 2007.
