According to Pro Football Talk, the Bears are likely looking to increase the competition for the role of Jay Cutler’s backup. The Bears have Jerrod Johnson and Jordan Palmer as their backup quarterbacks.
By going to Chicago, Freeman would have the benefit of working with coach Marc Trestman, who is known for his ability to develop quarterbacks.
Freeman played just one game with the Vikings in 2013 after signing with the team following his release from Tampa Bay. He completed just 20 of 53 passes against the New York Giants and wound up with a concussion. He never got back on the field for the Vikings.
Freeman was Tampa Bay’s 2009 first-round draft pick. He was released after he accused the Buccaneers of leaking confidential information about his status in the NFL’s substance-abuse program. He was also fined for an unauthorized interview and missing a team meeting then was demoted behind rookie Mike Glennon.
On the season, Freeman threw for just 761 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.
Weber, a graduate of the University of Minnesota, signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2011. He also spent time on the Tampa Bay practice squad, according to ESPN.
As a senior with the Gophers in 2010 Weber threw for 2,679 yards and 20 touchdowns.
