The Josh Freeman story is complicated, but his mindset on what his role with the Vikings is is simple. He wants to play. When or if that will happen is anybody’s guess.
“I don’t know what the plan is on either side,”Freeman said Wednesday, via the Star Tribune. “Right now, I’m living in the moment and continuing to be the best that I can be for this team. It’s kind of a deal where that bridge is far down the road. When we come to it, we’ll take care of it.”
Freeman’s first and only start with the Vikings came last month in a Monday night game against the Giants. He was historically bad, missing on 33 of 53 pass attempts.
“It was such a narrow focus coming in that week and understanding the exact plays,” said Freeman, who had signed with the Vikings just two weeks earlier. “Now kind of having a grasp of the entire offense rather than specific notes for each play, it’s allowing me to relax and play my game a little more.”
Freeman was the third-string quarterback in Minnesota’s win over Washington last week, and although coach Leslie Frazier says there’s a “chance” Freeman could start this week if Ponder is unavailable, there’s no definitive answer to whether he’ll be second or third on the depth chart if he doesn’t start.
“I’m a competitor,” Freeman said. “You live to play on Sundays. You don’t live to play throughout the week, although practice is a huge part of it leading up to Sundays. It’s a role that they’ve placed on me for now, so I’ll continue to work. But I got to say, it’s been a great run as far as us competing and pushing each other.”
